A little town called Khanauri in Punjab’s Sangrur area has be come a grim hotspot. Individuals come here to peer down at the Bhakra Main Line trench planning to see dead bodies that get held up on the floodgate doors. They are not demons – they are searching for family or companions who have vanished. The trench runs unhindered like a bolt for 159 km through Punjab’s eastern regions and Khanauri torrent is the main point where the streaming water is backed off. In the previous couple of years, a large portion of the bodies that turned up at Khanauri were of ranchers who had submitted suicide, essentially as a result of obligation and monetary emergency.

Jagmohan Garg said in Punjab all in all, assessments of ranchers’ suicides run from a couple of thousand to several thousands. A review by three colleges evaluated that in the vicinity of 2000 and 2011, almost 7,000 ranchers conferred suicide, the greater part of them in view of obligation.
